Rear Brake lights not working?

My brother was following me home the other day and he told me that neither of my brake lights were working at the rear of the car. we took the lighting fixture out and checked the bulbs and they appeared to be fine. he had a few spares in his car so we tried swapping them about to see if that was the problem to no avail. everything else in the clusters seemed to be working fine.

can't for the life of me figure out what could be the problem. i don't know my arse from my elbow about this sort of thing (or cars in general for that matter...) so any help would be appreciated.

Cheers chaps.

Does the high level brake light work?

Have you check fuses or Brake swtich at the top of the brake pedal?

Hi mate, no i haven't checked fuses as of yet as i dion't know where they are in the car (like i say very limited knowledge of the car in general...) and i was unaware of there being a 'brake switch' on top of the pedal? what is that and what does it do?

your Central fuse box is located behind the glovebox, you have to remove the glovebox (open the glovebox and squeeze in the side gently and ease it down on both side, the glove box should now be loose at the top, let it drop slightly and pull each side, you will see where its attached at the bottom and pull the out)

you should not see the central fusebox....Fuse F93 is brake lights aand should be 10amp.

The switch is located at the top of the brake pedal, when you push the brake it releases the switch completing the circuit and your brake lights come on.

This switch can fail or stick so the brake light doesn't come on, you remove the switch by twisting it (clockwise) gently, it can be stiff.

The plunger on the switch (the part that goes though the hole) pull it gently to fully extend it, to refit you need to push in the brake pedal and twist anti-clockwise, when you release the brake pedal you should hear a clicking sound from the switch as it resets to the correct depth.

I wonder what the outcome of this one was I have the same problem, I checked the fuse which is fine, looking at a similar thread it mentions the fuse also operates the high level light, so could it be the pedal switch? although that would seem unlikely?

Cheers
