Swarf in diesel?

Evnin all

Well just got my car back from having the glow plugs done following one that snapped off a local company managed to drill out in situ for £160!

thats not including the plugs anyway. As some of you may know I have had the flashing glow plug light of doom on and limp home mode, and poor cold starting with smoke till warm then runs normal (apart from power and glow plug light) things happening for a week now.

Just before I take to Delphi speacialist in the morning for new injector I thought I'd take off the fuel filter and drain into transparent containers and see whats in there. I have been reading all about the posibility that the fuel pump can go , putting swarf into the fuel. Mine ran to near empty about two weeks ago so I am a little worried.

I put a magnetic screwdriver (clean one) through the diesel and found 3 visible metal particles although they are still minute see below (if it uploads) picture. I have put the filter in the shot to get an idea of scale.

Do you think I should worry ie new pump fuel system flush as my other thought is when filling up a few days ago the tanker was in filling the station and I was told many years ago never to fill up oin this case as it trows up all the debris in the petrol stations tanks and that then enters your car. My other concern is obviously some left over swarf from the garage drilling out the plug and somes slipped through.

Or do you think I should just get the injectors done anyway?

Both photos show the particles there was three but i dropped it before applying to the paper.

H i sorry thought I'd better ring them so you can see the bits that im talking about . there was some other black stuff floating around but not much was expecting more.

Just had a thought though, is the cylinder head in the tdci aluminium? wouldn't have thought so due to the pressures involved but just thought if it was then that would rule out swarf from the glow plug drilling.

Hello

The amount of swarf you found is not sufficient to justify any action. You need to collect all using a magnet and the amount collected should from a circle about 5mm diameter. If the amount is below this you can afford to keep it under observation. This particles could have come from the diesel and the filter would have done its job.

hhhmmm, there you go, every days a school day. after having had old rovers in the past with warped cylinder heads on a petrol (I suppose higher temps involved with petrol) you would think a diesel with the high pressures they run would need to be iron.

Cannot think of anyway swarf from the combustion chamber can enter the fuel system.

Changing injectors after finding swarf could be a costly mistake. Maybe keep an eye on it for a while 1st.

+1, once its in the combustion chamber its either burnt or blown out the exhaust, or both.

Again if it makes any difference the car once warm runs sweet apart from the missing power band, I even think sometimes its fixed itself and accelerate just to be sure but the boost doesn't come

would this still be pump /or injector. I've also noticed i've got the old cam shaft sensor. At first i thought it was the update grey one, but its just the connector plug thats grey the unit itself is black. so may change that too. Got quoted £19.96 + vat at frauds.

If it was the sensor causing the fault, Would fitting the sensor immediately clear the limp home or would I have to use the F super to check and clear fault before I coud tell it worked???

Those particles are easily big enough to block/damage an injector unfortuantely. And your symptoms could well be down to dodgy injectors.

Fitting 4 new injectors would be IMO foolish if you've found swarf, as you could kill the new set in a matter of days.

I'd change the filter, and keep an eye on it to see if any more particles appear.

Yes but you have to wonder how it got there, Was not from the recent work done to it so where else?

Fuel pump breaking up, And those particles have been through the fuel rail and missed the injectors and got returned to the
tank with the excess fuel and trapped by the filter?

What about any particles that did not get returned to the fuel filter, That will contaminate the injectors very quickly.

20p as is.

Cheers for that, just to clarify I emptied the entire contents of the filter. In that I opened the trap let that drain into one dish, then tipped it up to get the remainder out the in/out pipes. I supose there is still going to be some left over. But seemed empty. I'll fit a new one just in case. And see what happens with the Delphi peeps today.

Phil, did you put the car into Argyle Diesel? Thinking on sending off my injectors to be tested and just wondered

Hi, I phoned Argyll as they are alittle closer but they never got back to me but McAlister fuel injection engineers in Cumbernauld came back. Very good apart from losing my number and not too dear, £60+VAT (£72) for recode and diagnosis or £200 +VAT for same plus recon. injector fitted may do a deal for all 4 to be done. They are not pushy and only do what is needed done ie; won't try and tel you, you need a turbo if its just an egr fault or a recode needed etc.

the number for them is,01236727008

I'm not slating Argyll though just that they never phoned back. but I hear good things about them also and I beleive my work uses them too for injector suff.
