I asked my dealer to update the maps on my brand new Focus before I collected it in October.
It was on F6.1, built June 18,so it could go to F7.
He said he did it but when I got home and investigated via etis, they had done nothing. Can't be bothered to go back, no confidence in them.
I don't think they bothered because it is to much hassle
Actually, Trev, have you checked the version number of your maps on SYNC itself?

Since the process doesn't provide a way of updating the central database, even if the maps had been updated there would be no way for ETIS to have a record of it...

Hi

Update could be relatively easy if map files were not tied to VIN, in fact all updates could be.

Dealer or Ford could download updates onto a suitable USB, Owners on payment of a refundable deposit and possibly a small fee could borrow said USB from Dealer with clear and concise instruction how to upload to car. USB would then be returned for next Owner.

The vast majority of owners would no doubt just drive there cars and never enquire about these updates.

It would appear considering the problems reported that while Ford suggest that software can be easily updated, it is only to be carried out if cars develop bugs or flaws in system. Only then provided you are lucky to have Dealer who is Tech Savy are you likely to receive assistance in updating.

Hi Steve,

Yes, I get my info of which version of SYNC3 I have and which map version off SYNC in the car. Map is F6.1

I was led to believe from a post somewhere on here, I think, that before map can be updated you have to update SYNC itself.

Etis says there is a sync software update for my veh. (See below, no upgrade to sync module)

But as you can see from info taken off etis today nothing on my car has been touched/changed since its build in April

Hi Trev

Yes, completing the latest software update is a prerequisite for accessing the latest maps. Once you've updated the software and uploaded the confirmation, the web page offers you the map updates.

If you feel up to it, enter your VIN on the update page, and download the software. The page is https://www.ford.co.uk/owner/resources-and-support/sync-bluetooth/update#/status/

Having spent my entire career in IT, I often incorrectly assume that everyone understands all the concepts. If you need any help, feel free to message me, and I'll do what I can.

Steve

Thanks Steve, very much appreciated

No problem.

I forgot to mention that there was an earlier software update dated 16 August 2018 that you probably don't have, so you might have to perform two software updates before you can access the new maps.

The latest software update, the one that precedes the map update, is dated 20 October.

Indeed, it's F8. I installed it yesterday.

But I've got a problem. It didn't generate an XML file. :(
The last update didn't generate an XML file either, but, this time, I'm invited to hit a button labelled "I have successfully installed the software" once I've completed the update.

I'll see what happens when I do. Meanwhile, the file is still downloading...

When you do, you will be prompted to select an XML file to upload. :)

OK, for the maps I guess the XML is not really necessary. Irrespective of what version you currently have in your car, it will always offer you the latest one. The XML is necessary it in the case of firmware updates, which are incremental, but for maps I guess it's no big deal.

You're right. It seems the website builders still don't communicate effectively with the SYNC software builders.

I guess the maps are only a big deal if you're repeatedly offered the same map version, and fail to notice when a new one is available.

And you really wouldn't want to spend hours trying to install a map version that you already have!

Failed first time but managed to get the update in.

No XML file generated though; has anyone managed to get one to update the website?

If u already have installed F8 and u didn't receive the XML files.

There is an official solution now

https://www.ford.nl/content/dam/guxeu/rhd/central/owners/resources-and-support/sync-%26-bluetooth-support/update/documents/Interrogator_AB.zip

  1. Download this file above(ZIP 44KB). Unpack the file and copy the contents to a USB stick. (The USB stick must be formatted in ExFAT)
  2. Get in your car and turn on the engine
  3. Insert the USB stick into a USB port on your Ford once the SYNC 3 system is fully booted. Make sure that no other USB devices are connected.
  4. Wait until the message 'Installation complete' appears (this takes about 1 minute). Now a new log file should have been created on the USB stick.
  5. Go back to your computer and confirm the update by uploading the log file to the Ford website

I followed the instructions above to download the file to create the upload file for the Ford site then rechecked my VIN and it said I had another Map update to do (and the Download file was different to the one from a couple of weeks ago too). I went through the download and USB creation process and it was finished in a couple of minutes (although it was 23Gb on the USB) so I am guessing its the updated maps with the update file creation in-built. We shall see when I put that USB back on the Laptop at home tonight.

Driving yesterday, I noticed that the new A1 / A14 area on the F8 maps has been updated but I don't think the programmers realised that there is a new stretch of A1 in that area as for about 2 miles, the car symbol was about 100 yards to the West of where it thought the A1 should be.

Anyone know of an EMail address of website where mapping errors can be highlighted to those who create the maps?
