The pronounciation of "Ford".

Splitting hairs perhaps, however as a spelling and grammar OCD-sufferer something I've noticed of recent that's got my attention.

I've always thought that Ford was pronounced "F-oh-rd". The "O" sounding like "Oh". However I've heard more and more folks, especially at dealers, pronouncing it "F-aww-rd".

Considering its an American company I'd forgive people for using Americanisms, however it's got me thinking - is it pronounced "Fohrd" or "Fawwrd"?

Sitting back and awaiting the inevitable argument that will follow...! :stir:

For extra OCD'ness there are plenty of examples of companies with perfectly good names, but the public in some countries just said it their own way regardless.

Think back to how Nestlé was always pronounced as Nestles

More recently when Lidl started opening stores in the UK they didn't run TV or radio adverts. The population at large decided the name was pronounced 'liddle' and its been called that ever since. No one cared it was supposed to be pronounced 'leedle' ;)
If you had phoned the company HQ they would have said 'Hello leedle' but with no voice ads the public made up their own version, which is now used in the UK for TV/radio ads.

Even if we just think of cars I've heard plenty of people talk about: Renalts, Pewjots, Mishibushy, numererous versions of IVACO from 'Iveeko' to 'Ive a co' and thinking about trucks some just avoid Magirus Deutz altogether lol.

Too much time on my hands :)

I say Tomato, you say... well.. Tomato... lol  :second:

I pronounce the car company in the same way that I refer to the water access crossing where a road or track may lead through a Ford, a small body of water, often a stream or of similar nature.

*My above statement will be of useless Information as depending on how you pronounce the water crossing "Ford" in relation to the motor car company word "Ford" (presuming it's the same way) this will be of no use or in anyway represent in depth quality posting, neither clarity to my words*

Lol. Thanks for correcting my Pronunciation, raynkar!

Looking at that ad I miss my old Fiesta... a great wee car. Wasn't that long ago that telly and advert voice-overs were all in RP English, it sounds so civilised!

None of this "Fawwwwrd" nonsense...

I do prefer the older car ads. While they sometines suggested the car would add to your 'pulling power' they did also often describe the cars engine power or interior gadgets.

Modern car ads often show lifestyle scenes totally unconnected with the car itself.
When we consider that many people 'buying' a brand new Fiesta may never actually fully own the car, keep it for more than three years or have no interest at all in engine hp etc it shows how much things have changed.

When looking at a new Focus recently I was asking questions about the different torque outputs from various engines, I may as well have been asking the sales rep to explain quantum string theory lol.

Same when the Mondeo came out.

Some said Mon dee Oh. Instead of Mon Day Oh.

What puzzles me is when did the Carribean suddenly become the Ka RIB E an??

My first memory of that was Rustie Lee the Chef of TV. She suddenly started to

say Ka RIB E an and i thought EH? where is that... A new found country?

Mondeo should have been easy as it was an existing word with known pronunciation. Hearing the different pronunciations of VIGNALE is always amusing.

With regards to Carribean changing it seems that Kilometre has changed too and is now 'kill-ometter' :)
