I have same problem adjusted striking plate works for a short while, so now i just reset lock and slam it,can't be bothered to dismantle lock.
The hatch lid needs to be pushed up fully now, saves a sore head also same with the bonnet as both still have original struts.

 

I don't really think the struts are supposed to help close the tailgate. I just drop mine from around six inches. If I mess it up and it half latches I can just about push it closed without having to open again, or I open it and drop it again.

When opening, there isn't much assistance or resistance until about half way. But the important thing is they stop the tailgate dropping on my head. Worn struts used to do this on a windy day.
