Weak Tailgate Struts

I know they are weak as they are a bit slow to open (they do open - I picked up this set from a boneyard as the original came with the car ~290k kms were worse).
My question is, are struts supposed to assist in tailgate closure? When I close the tailgate, if I don't push it all the way down with some force, it sort of half latches, so I need to lift up a bit and slam it down again.

I don't really think the struts are supposed to help close the tailgate. I just drop mine from around six inches. If I mess it up and it half latches I can just about push it closed without having to open again, or I open it and drop it again.

When opening, there isn't much assistance or resistance until about half way. But the important thing is they stop the tailgate dropping on my head. Worn struts used to do this on a windy day.

Struts work brilliantly from this company. Also trolley jacks etc
Good prices on the struts as well
Had around 6 sets of struts off them now for different Fords

Hi

I found replacement struts from MAGNETI MARELLI very good for the MK3, both front & back.
