RAC Homestart just left, diagnostics were "misfire on No.4 cylinder"
He checked spark plug, looks new from the service in October.
He checked compression, using cylinder 2 as a guide,
Cylinder 2 seemed lower than he expected, but cylinder 4 gave a good reading (looks to have twice as much compression as cylinder 2)
Management light now off, but his laptop connection playing up.
He then got a new coil pack out of the van, connected it up, and engine sounded a lot smoother, an even idle, so recommended I replace the coil pack.
Eurocarspares here I come....

 

It might be worth taking into account that, this engine uses a 'wasted spark' system meaning that, the coil fires on cylinder number 1 and 4 simultaneously before then, firing on 2 and 3...again, simultaneously.
The point I'm making is, if you have an 'electrical' misfire on number 4 caused by a failing coil, you should really have a misfire on number 1 also as it uses the same coil in the coil pack and that's basically what the coil is on this engine....two coils in one pack.

There's a chance that something has failed internally between the coil and the output connector(where you plug the lead) but, there's also a chance that your misfire could be down to a faulty lead and not the coil. It might be worth mentioning this to your local motor factors.

If you change the coil pack make sure you get an OE one, cheap ones are very hit and miss as many on here have found out.

Many have bought them from the link below and never had a problem with them, they are made by Visteon, who supply Ford, even my local Ford dealer now keeps these in there stores along side the boxed branded Ford ones.

Thanks for the link, possibly unfortunately I bought a new one from Eurocarsparts on Saturday morning,
Description on invoice - ignition coil - Ford Fiesta M01J01 for £33.38 (same part number as RAC engineer had in his van)

Once fitted, management light out and running fine
Sunday night, drove car again, misfire back and management light on again

I then changed the HT lead for cylinder 4, using one off an old set I had - management light out again, a bit better, but misfiring at low revs

I guess next step is new set of HT leads?
I am also now looking to by an OBD2 code reader, seen this one on ebay?

I have an OP-COM OBD1 reader that connects to my laptop and gives a lot more than just codes, unfortunately this is only for Opel/Vauxhall, and bought it as our Corsa was too old for an OBD2 reader, but too new for the paperclip method.
Ideally I would like something like this instead of just a code reader, can anyone recommend one at a reasonable price?

I know from first hand experience that the coil pack on mine, a 1.8 Duratec engine, is the same as on a 1.4 Ford Sigma engine (Zetec SE), so there's a good chance it's the same coil pack for a "Ford Fiesta M01J01", but don't quote me on that please. It could be the leads breaking down, how old are they, mileage on them?
