Stop PowerShift auto-changing in manual mode?

I'm sure it's impossible, so it's a wild shot in the dark.

2012 Mondeo with 2.0 EcoBoost engine with PowerShift gearbox. I've been trying to learn how to use the manual mode of the gearbox as I'm not satisfied with the "Drive" mode for every day driving and the "Sport" mode is over the top for the same type of driving.

As its quite different using the PowerShift in manual mode compared to a full manual gearbox, there's no muscle memory to learn. So I've been trying to keep the gear number in my head, adding and subtracting the gear number as I flip the lever up or down, which seems to be working fine so far. However I've found that sometimes the gearbox will override my decision and change itself, especially from 3rd to 2nd, so the number in my head no longer matches the actual gear so from that point onwards I select the wrong gear (usually 1st while intending to get 2nd). I know the gearbox is trying to avoid stalling the engine but I don't like selecting 1st when moving at 15mph, I'd much rather the engine lug or stall. I don't have a problem with the gearbox going down to 1st from 2nd automatically, in fact, I never select 1st intentionally, I let the car decide.

Is there any way to prevent the gearbox from going down to 2nd from 3rd at all? I'm guessing it's impossible, but I'm hoping it's not.

In manual mode it shows what gear it is in on the dash display in standard oem factory spec dash display.
As previously stated it will override what gear you are in to avoid damage, like for example it wont change down when you manually request it if it would mean the downshift caused the eng to over rev

Just to clarify what I meant. With standard dash you can only see what gear you are in if operating manually and lever in S position.
With lever in D you cannot see what gear you are in.
Deepdiver and hamish are correct, if you want to see what gear you are in at all times you need the mod they advise.
I think this is now available through Bigi on here

Yeah, I thought not. The gearbox could just open the clutch to prevent engine damage rather than downshifting without me knowing. Yeah, I know about the gears number on the dash, but in low speeds doing a complex maneuver, I can't keep on glancing down to the indicator to make sure the gear hasn't changed without my knowledge.

I just need to figure out roughly what speed will cause the box to change itself and be more cautious at around those speeds.

Cheers all.

Not trying to be funny, but it all sounds overly complicated for an automatic gearbox? Surely the whole point is that you shouldn't have to be thinking about what it's doing.

I haven't owned an auto for yonks, but am seriously thinking about one next time - must be cos I'm getting older...

twincarbs - the PowerShift gearbox can always be in automatic mode and you can elect never to use the manual mode if you prefer, but I've personally found I don't particularly like the "Drive" mode for a couple reasons, and I find I prefer using the manual mode. I'm also finding I definitely prefer having control over the gear selections rather than leaving it to the computer to decide - which doesn't always choose the best gear as it can't see the road in front of you, or know what your ultimate intentions are.

I would have much preferred to get a Titanium X Sport 2.0 EcoBoost with a manual gearbox, but it's not sold as an option, same with the Mk5 version. I also would prefer an AWD version, as the engine really pushes the limit of FWD, but a Volvo V70 T6 AWD with a similar spec was out of my budget (EDIT: though also only available in automatic, meh).

Eddles, on a side point, do you not find it messy/difficult to change gears if the steering wheel is way off the fairly straight ahead position.
Have you seen those vertcal extensions you can attach to the levers

I'm alright with the lever - not quite sure what you're referring to, but I don't have the steering wheel paddles, I use the gearshift lever on the central console to change gears? Cheers!

aaaah, sorry about that ref the st wheel paddles. I forgot, and I had my wonderful MK4.5 for 5 years!!! Still miss it in quite a few ways

Without driving it difficult to confirm 101% but it sounds ok from how you describe

It is normal for it NOT to change up to 6th before 40mph.

I wouldn't want to be "using" an engine below 1500 rpm

I drive a Transit Minibus and the green section on the tacho is 1500-3000 it is fine in 6th at 40mph
That's kind of irrelevant when you're talking about a Mondeo unless that minibus has the same engine\gearbox\final drive ratio\tyre size as the Mondeo.

The last diesel I had was a Peugeot coupe 2.2hdi and driving that at sub 1500rpm was actually worse for fuel economy and destroyed the DMF in short order.
